Abstract

Anemia is prevalent in patients with cancer, and anemia of inflammation (AI) is a common pathophysiological type. AI is mainly characterized by functional iron deficiency. This review summarizes the current knowledge regarding the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, molecular mechanisms, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic advancements in cancer-related AI. It focuses on the central role of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the emerging therapeutic strategies targeting the IL-6-hepcidin-ferroportin axis. Additionally, this review integrates practical educational content designed for oncologists and nurses to enhance their clinical competence in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing AI; it is essential to alleviate the symptom burden and improve the quality of life of patients with cancer.
