Abstract

Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and sphingomyelin (SM) are four main types of phospholipids in the plasma membrane of mammalian cells. These phospholipids are important for maintaining normal cell or tissue function, but their levels and molecular species composition are altered by the type of disease or disease progression. Therefore, supplementation of PC, PE, PS, and SM may be effective in treating and alleviating various diseases. In this review, we discuss the possibility of PC, PS, PE, and SM as preventive or therapeutic agents for diseases.
