Abstract

The concept of vascular and enteral access is a core component of modern pediatric care. Administration of appropriate fluid, nutrition, and medication depends upon reliable delivery. As such, an understanding of techniques for obtaining reliable vascular and enteral access is essential for delivery of patient care. Pediatric patients present unique challenges due to their smaller anatomy and the need for long-term nutritional strategies in certain conditions. This review details considerations for decision-making regarding means of access and the technical considerations required for establishing and maintaining vascular and enteral access. We focus on practical application to the pediatric patient.
