The American Heart Association (AHA) has defined ideal levels of seven modifiable cardiovascular health (CVH) factors, known as Life's Simple 7, that consist of smoking, physical activity, diet, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, and blood pressure. Maintaining ideal levels of these factors has been recommended as a prevention strategy against not only cardiovascular diseases but also neurodegenerative disorders, e.g., cognitive decline and dementia. However, studies exploring the beneficial effects of the AHA’s CVH metrics on cognitive outcomes, especially among older populations, have been uncertain, and solid evidence is lacking in this field. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify the relationship between the AHA’s CVH metrics and cognitive outcomes. 14 longitudinal studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed a considerable effect of a favourable total CVH score on reduced risk of incident dementia in adults aged 70 years or older. When looking at the individual factors, dementia risk can be reduced significantly if older adults achieved the recommended level of physical activity, blood glucose, or total cholesterol. The association with smoking appeared to be borderline, and there was no association between diet, body mass index hazard ratio or blood pressure and dementia risk. The authors concluded that their findings provide evidence that maintaining a favourable level of CVH score, either in mid- or late- life, would substantially reduce the risk of dementia among older adults. Preserving cardiovascular health by quitting smoking, engaging in physical exercise, controlling blood glucose and total cholesterol might be especially effective for forestalling cognitive decline and dementia.
Abstract
This study aimed to quantify the relationships between the American Heart Association (AHA) Cardiovascular Health (CVH) metrics, namely AHA Life's Simple 7, and cognitive outcomes. We searched PubMed and Embase (January 1, 2010-August 24, 2022) and finally included 14 longitudinal studies (311654 participants with 8006 incident dementia cases). Random-effects meta-analysis and one-stage linear mixed-effects models were performed. Increased CVH score seemed to associate with decreased risk of incident dementia in a linear manner, but this relationship varied by the measurement age of CVH metrics. That is, midlife CVH tended to have a linear association with late-life dementia risk, whereas a J-shaped association was observed between the late-life CVH score and dementia. In addition, late-life dementia risk was reduced significantly if individuals maintained an ideal level of AHA's CVH guidelines of physical activity, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, and smoking. However, our meta-analysis did not show a significant association between CVH score and global cognitive decline rate. Following AHA's CVH guidelines and maintaining CVH at an optimal level would substantially reduce the late-life dementia risk. More research is required to explore the link between a favorable CVH score and cognitive trajectories among cognitively asymptomatic older populations.

Among the causes of sarcopenia, motoneuron and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degeneration have been proposed as key determinants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 2-year multimodal training intervention involving aerobic, strength and balance exercises on muscle mass and function, motoneuronal and NMJ health in a population of older individuals classified as sarcopenic. This study was a randomised controlled trial which enrolled 45 sarcopenic participants (34 females and 11 males) who were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: intervention or control group. Results show that the 2-year multimodal training intervention seemingly preserved NMJ stability, preventing serum C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF) [a biomarker of muscle wasting and weakness] concentration rise in the intervention group, although this biomarker increased significantly only in the control group. Conversely, neurofilament light chain (NfL) [clinical biomarker of many neurodegenerative diseases] concentration did not change in either group. Finally, improvements of physical performance were correlated with changes of serum biomarkers of NMJ stability. Authors conclude that a 2-year multimodal training intervention including aerobic, strength and balance exercises is effective for preventing CAF concentration increments, suggesting a positive effect on NMJ stability.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Ageing is accompanied by a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, potentially determining the insurgence of sarcopenia. Evidence suggests that motoneuron and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degeneration contribute to sarcopenia pathogenesis. Seeking for strategies able to slow down sarcopenia insurgence and progression, we investigated whether a 2-year mixed-model training involving aerobic, strength and balance exercises would be effective for improving or preserving motoneuronal health and NMJ stability, together with muscle mass, strength and functionality in an old, sarcopenic population. METHODS Forty-five sarcopenic elderly (34 females; 11 males) with low dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) lean mass and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score <9 were randomly assigned to either a control group [Healthy Aging Lifestyle Education (HALE), n = 21] or an intervention group [MultiComponent Intervention (MCI), n = 24]. MCI trained three times per week for 2 years with a mix of aerobic, strength and balance exercises matched with nutritional advice. Before and after the intervention, ultrasound scans of the vastus lateralis (VL), SPPB and a blood sample were obtained. VL architecture [pennation angle (PA) and fascicle length (Lf)] and cross-sectional area (CSA) were measured. As biomarkers of neuronal health and NMJ stability status, neurofilament light chain (NfL) and C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF) concentrations were measured in serum. Differences in ultrasound parameters, NfL and CAF concentration and physical performance between baseline and follow-up were tested with mixed ANOVA or Wilcoxon test. The relationship between changes in physical performance and NfL or CAF concentration was assessed through correlation analyses. RESULTS At follow-up, MCI showed preserved VL architecture (PA, Lf) despite a reduced CSA (-8.4%, P < 0.001), accompanied by maintained CAF concentration and ameliorated overall SPPB performance (P = 0.007). Conversely, HALE showed 12.7% decrease in muscle CSA (P < 0.001), together with 5.1% and 5.5% reduction in PA and Lf (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively), and a 6.2% increase in CAF (P = 0.009) but improved SPPB balance score (P = 0.007). NfL concentration did not change in either group. In the population, negative correlations between changes in CAF concentration and SPPB total score were found (P = 0.047), whereas no correlation between NfL and SPPB variations was observed. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that our 2-year mixed aerobic, strength and balance training seemed effective for preventing the age and sarcopenia-related increases in CAF concentration, preserving NMJ stability as well as muscle structure (PA and Lf) and improving physical performance in sarcopenic older individuals.

The number of hours in a day is fixed and finite, distributed between obligatory time (such as time spent working, sleeping, domestic activities, commuting or eating) and discretionary time (the remaining ‘free’ time). The way individuals restructure the timing of their behaviours can influence the effectiveness of exercise, and have important health consequences, depending on what activities are displaced. The aim of this study was to investigate how previously inactive adults restructure their time when they undertake morning or evening exercise. This study was conducted within a larger randomised controlled trial which used a three-armed, randomised controlled trial design, with a 12-week lifestyle intervention. Participants (n = 100) were randomized into one of two intervention groups, or a waitlist control group at a 2:2:1 ratio. Results showed that time spent engaging in physical activity was significantly increased from baseline at both mid- and post-intervention for both intervention groups. Furthermore, participants in both intervention groups reported more time spent sleeping, and less time watching television/playing videogames. Authors conclude that the time for exercise was largely drawn from a discretionary time (watching TV), and the patterns of change in time use was similar when exercise was performed in the morning compared with the evening.
Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate changes in sedentary and active behaviors when previously inactive adults start exercising in the morning or evening. One-hundred adults with overweight or obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) were recruited for a 12-week intervention and randomized to one of three groups: (i) morning exercise (AMEx; 0600-0900); (ii) evening exercise (PMEx; 1600-1900); or (iii) waitlist control. AMEx and PMEx were prescribed self-paced aerobic exercise to achieve a weekly total of 250 min via a combination of supervised and unsupervised training. Sedentary and active behavior times were measured at baseline, mid- and post-intervention using the multimedia activity recall for children and adults. Time spent engaging in physical activity was significantly increased from baseline at both mid- (+ 14-22 min·day-1) and post-intervention (+ 12-19 min·day-1), for AMEx and PMEx. At 12-weeks, participants in both morning and evening exercise groups reported increased time spent Sleeping (+ 36 and + 20 min·day-1, respecitively), and reduced time spent watching TV/playing videogames (- 32 and - 25 min·day-1, respectively). In response to an exercise stimulus, previously inactive adults make encouraging modifications in how they use their time, and the patterns of change are similar with morning and evening exercise.

Advancements in glucose monitoring make assessing free-living postprandial blood glucose levels convenient and feasible. Continuous glucose monitoring systems assess blood glucose levels 24h a day and have been demonstrated to enhance diabetes management. Both acutely and chronically, physical activity and/or exercise is a powerful modulator of glycaemic control. The aim of this study was to examine if the alterations in glycaemic control in older adults who exercise were different compared to young adults who exercise, in response to short-term removal of exercise. This study was a randomised, cross-over, exploratory study design which included 20 participants (9 young, active participants and 11 older, active participants). Participants had glycaemic control assessed for 3 days while performing their normal habitual exercise and for 3 days while refraining from habitual exercise. Results show that three days of exercise removal impairs glycaemic control in older adults as well as young adults. In fact, older adults (even though they have worse glycaemic control than younger adults) do not experience a greater impairment in glycaemic control compared to young adults. Authors conclude that their findings support the overall need for regular, daily exercise in adults, particularly older adults, who have a worse glycaemic profile.
Abstract
Postprandial glycemia (PPG) predicts cardiovascular disease, and short-term physical inactivity increases PPG in young, active adults. Whether this occurs in older, active adults who may be more prone to bouts of inactivity is unknown. This study determined if postprandial interstitial glucose (PPIG) was impaired in active older adults following the removal of exercise for 3 days (NOEX) compared to active young adults. In this randomized, crossover study, 11 older (69.1 ± 1.9 years) and 9 young (32.8 ± 1.8 years) habitually active (≥90 min/week of exercise) adults completed 3-days of NOEX and 3-days of normal habitual exercise (EX), separated by ≥1 week. Diet was standardized across phases. Glycemic control (3-day average) was assessed via continuous glucose monitoring during both phases. Significant main effects of age and phase were detected (p < 0.05), but no interaction was found for steps/day (p > 0.05) (old EX: 6283 ± 607, old NOEX 2380 ± 382 and young EX: 8798 ± 623, young NOEX 4075 ± 516 steps/day). Significant main effects of age (p = 0.002) and time (p < 0.001) existed for 1-h PPIG, but no effect of phase or interactions was found (p > 0.05). Significant main effects (p < 0.05) of age (old: 114 ± 1 mg/dl, young: 106 ± 1 mg/dl), phase (NOEX: 112 ± 1 mg/dl, EX: 108 ± 1 mg/dl), and time (0 min: 100 ± 2, 30 min: 118 ± 2, 60 min: 116 ± 2, 90 min: 111 ± 2, 120 min: 108 ± 2 mg/dl) in 2-h PPIG were detected, but no interaction was found (p > 0.05). However, only significant main effects of phase (NOEX: 14 ± 1 and EX:12 ± 1, p > 0.05) were found for 24-h blood glucose standard deviation. Older adults appear to have impaired glycemic control compared to young adults and exercise removal impairs glycemic control in both populations. Yet, the impairment in glycemic control with exercise removal is not different between old and young adults.

Obesity is characterised by excessive fat accumulation that often occurs during the process of aging. Aging is accompanied not only by a gradual increase in body fat stores but also a decrease in muscle mass, muscle function, and water retention. The aim of this study was to assess which nutrition and exercise interventions are most effective for improving the body composition (fat mass and muscle mass), body mass index, and waist circumference in persons with overweight or obesity near retirement age (55 to 70 years of age). This study was a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomised controlled trials of sixty-six studies. Results of the NMA showed that the most effective strategy to improve body composition, i.e., losing fat without increasing risk of sarcopenia in persons with obesity around retirement age, was combining energy restriction with resistance training or with mixed exercise (resistance combined with aerobic exercise) and/or high-protein intake. In fact, without training, an energy-restricted diet with or without added protein helped individuals lose fat mass but also tended to result in losses of muscle mass. Authors conclude that an energy-restricted diet alone probably contributes to the development of sarcopenic obesity in persons of retirement age. Thus, to simultaneously lose weight and maintain muscle mass, authors recommend a combination of energy restriction and resistance training.
Abstract
The retirement phase is an opportunity to integrate healthy (nutrition/exercise) habits into daily life. We conducted this systematic review to assess which nutrition and exercise interventions most effectively improve body composition (fat/muscle mass), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) in persons with obesity/overweight near retirement age (ages 55-70 y). We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials, searching 4 databases from their inception up to July 12, 2022. The NMA was based on a random effects model, pooled mean differences, standardized mean differences, their 95% confidence intervals, and correlations with multi-arm studies. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. Ninety-two studies were included, 66 of which with 4957 participants could be used for the NMA. Identified interventions were clustered into 12 groups: no intervention, energy restriction (i.e., 500-1000 kcal), energy restriction plus high-protein intake (1.1-1.7 g/kg/body weight), intermittent fasting, mixed exercise (aerobic and resistance), resistance training, aerobic training, high protein plus resistance training, energy restriction plus high protein plus exercise, energy restriction plus resistance training, energy restriction plus aerobic training, and energy restriction plus mixed exercise. Intervention durations ranged from 8 wk to 6 mo. Body fat was reduced with energy restriction plus any exercise or plus high-protein intake. Energy restriction alone was less effective and tended to decrease muscle mass. Muscle mass was only significantly increased with mixed exercise. All other interventions including exercise effectively preserved muscle mass. A BMI and/or WC decrease was achieved with all interventions except aerobic training/resistance training alone or resistance training plus high protein. Overall, the most effective strategy for nearly all outcomes was combining energy restriction with resistance training or mixed exercise and high protein. Health care professionals involved in the management of persons with obesity need to be aware that an energy-restricted diet alone may contribute to sarcopenic obesity in persons near retirement age. Short sleep duration, defined as less than 6 hours/night, is associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Sleep restriction causes metabolic and behavioural changes suggesting that short sleep duration may contribute to the development of obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between short sleep duration or poor sleep quality and weight regain after weight loss. This study is based on data from the S-LiTE randomised, controlled trial. Participants followed a low-calorie diet (800 kcal/day) for eight weeks prior to randomisation. Those who lost at least 5% of initial weight were randomised to the control or intervention group. Results showed that participants with objectively measured short sleep duration after a diet-induced weight loss had less success during weight loss maintenance than those with longer sleep duration. Worse sleep quality was associated with less weight loss during a low-calorie diet and subsequent weight maintenance. Authors conclude that insufficient sleep predicts weight regain during interventional efforts to maintain weight loss. Exercise maintained low-calorie diet-induced improvements in sleep quality during 1 year of weight loss maintenance, and liraglutide transiently increased sleep duration.
Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Insufficient sleep may attenuate weight loss, but the role of sleep in weight loss maintenance is unknown. Since weight regain after weight loss remains a major obstacle in obesity treatment, we investigated whether insufficient sleep predicts weight regain during weight loss maintenance. METHODS In a randomized, controlled, two-by-two factorial study, 195 adults with obesity completed an 8-week low-calorie diet and were randomly assigned to 1-year weight loss maintenance with or without exercise and liraglutide 3.0 mg/day or placebo. Sleep duration and quality were measured before and after the low-calorie diet and during weight maintenance using wrist-worn accelerometers (GENEActiv) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). To test associations between insufficient sleep and weight regain, participants were stratified at randomization into subgroups according to sleep duration (≥6 h/night) or sleep quality (PSQI score ≤/>5). RESULTS After a diet-induced 13.1 kg weight loss, participants with short sleep duration at randomization regained 5.3 kg body weight (p = .0008) and had less reduction in body fat percentage compared with participants with normal sleep duration (p = .007) during the 1-year weight maintenance phase. Participants with poor sleep quality before the weight loss regained 3.5 kg body weight compared with good quality sleepers (p = .010). During the weight maintenance phase, participants undergoing liraglutide treatment displayed increased sleep duration compared with placebo after 26 weeks (5 vs. -15 min/night) but not after 1 year. Participants undergoing exercise treatment preserved the sleep quality improvements attained from the initial weight loss. CONCLUSIONS Short sleep duration or poor sleep quality was associated with weight regain after weight loss in adults with obesity.

Increasing physical activity is difficult for many individuals living with obesity and diabetes. Sustained, moderate activity is likely to be valuable for weight loss maintenance. The aim of this study was to explore whether randomisation to weight loss plus maintenance in the DiRECT trial was associated with physical activity, inactivity or sleep. DiRECT was a 2-year, open-label, cluster-randomised controlled trial conducted at 49 primary care (PC) practices. PC practices were randomised (1:1) to either an evidence-based weight management programme (Counterweight Plus; intervention) or best-practice care in accordance with guidelines (control). Results showed that: - repeated low-intensity advice to increase physical activity in the DiRECT intervention group did not produce change. - those people who had long-term weight loss success with the low-energy diet had positive changes in physical activity and inactivity. - wakefulness after sleep onset decreased in the intervention group. - weight loss ≥10% was associated with both increased physical activity and sleep quality. Authors conclude that it is important to optimise long-term weight loss maintenance by developing interventions encompassing restrained food intake, together with effective but affordable physical activity/inactivity strategies.
Abstract
AIMS: As sustained weight loss is vital for achieving remission of type 2 diabetes, we explored whether randomisation to weight loss plus maintenance in the DiRECT trial was associated with physical activity, inactivity or sleep. METHODS Participants were randomised to either a dietary weight management programme or best-practice care. The weight management group were encouraged to increase daily physical activity to their sustainable maximum. Objective measurement was achieved using a wrist-worn GENEActiv accelerometer for 7 days at baseline, 12 and 24 months in both groups. RESULTS Despite average weight loss of 10 kg at 12 months in the intervention (n = 66) group, there were no differences in total physical activity or inactivity compared with the control (n = 104) at any time point. However, in our exploratory analysis, those who lost more than 10% of their baseline body weight performed on average 11 mins/day more light activity than the <10% group at 24 months (p = 0.033) and had significantly lower bouts of Inactivity30min (interaction, p = 0.005) across 12 and 24 months. At 24 months, the ≥10% group had higher daily acceleration (38.5 ± 12.1 vs. 33.2 ± 11.1 mg, p = 0.020), and higher accelerations in the most active 5-hour period (59.4 ± 21.8 vs. 50.6 ± 18.3 mg, p = 0.023). Wakefulness after sleep onset decreased in the intervention group compared with the control group and also in the ≥10% weight loss group at 12 and 24 months. CONCLUSIONS Randomisation to a successful intensive weight loss intervention, including regular physical activity encouragement, was not associated with increased physical activity although sleep parameters improved. Physical activity was greater, and night-time waking reduced in those who maintained >10% weight loss at 12 and 24 months. TRIAL REGISTRATION ISRCTN03267836.

Pregnant women benefit from physical activity (PA) during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the FitMum PA interventions on sleep quantity and quality and sedentary time (SED). This study was a secondary analysis of the FitMum study which included 220 healthy pregnant women. Participants were randomised to one of three groups. Results showed that pregnant women are prone to low sleep quality and high SED, which worsens as pregnancy progresses. Pregnant women who received structured supervised exercise training had better sleep quality and less SED than pregnant women receiving standard prenatal care when self-reported. Furthermore, when measured by a consumer activity tracker, no differences were observed between groups. Authors conclude that interventions that increase PA levels might improve sleep quality and decrease SED in pregnant women. Future behavioural interventions targeting pregnant women should include evidence-based content to improve sleep quality and reduce SED.
Abstract
Pregnancy is often associated with poor sleep and high sedentary time (SED). We investigated the effect of physical activity (PA) interventions on sleep and SED in pregnant women. A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (n = 219) explored the effect of structured supervised exercise training (EXE) or motivational counseling on PA (MOT) compared to standard prenatal care (CON) on sleep and SED during pregnancy. Three times during pregnancy, sleep was determined by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and SED by the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ). Also, a wrist-worn consumer activity tracker measured sleep and SED continuously. Data from the activity tracker confirmed that sleep time decreases, and SED increases by approx. 30 and 24 min/day, respectively, from baseline (maximum gestational age (GA) week 15) to delivery. Compared to CON, the global PSQI score was better for EXE in GA week 28 (-0.8 [-1.5; -0.1], p = 0.031) and for both EXE and MOT in GA week 34 (-1 [-2; -0.5], p = 0.002; -1 [-2; -0.1], p = 0.026). In GA week 28, SED (h/day) from PPAQ was lower in EXE compared to both CON and MOT (-0.69 [-1; -0.0], p = 0.049; -0.6 [-1.0; -0.02], p = 0.042). In conclusion, PA interventions during pregnancy improved sleep quality and reduced SED.

The change in global demographics, with an increase in the proportion of the elderly who take up a large proportion of healthcare resources, will become a major challenge for health systems. Active ageing is defined by the WHO as “the process of promoting health, social security, and social contribution of the elderly to promote their quality of life”. The aim of this Iranian 6-week randomised controlled trial, including 60 participants aged 60 years or over, was to evaluate the effectiveness of an active ageing programme. The weekly group sessions included the topics nutrition, physical activity, responsibility, stress management, communications and spiritual aspects. Outcome measures were various questionnaires. Compared to controls, patients undergoing the programme experienced significant improvements in active mind maintenance, physical-functional activity, social contacts, productive engagement, social-institutional participation, but not agent attitude. The authors conclude that training programmes at the level of health centres are effective in promoting active ageing in an elderly population.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Active aging has been the paradigm of the old-age lifestyle. Integrated aging care interventions in health centers primarily focus on diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, depression, and cardiovascular diseases, and there is no program or training regarding active aging. This study was carried out from September to December 2021 to determine the effectiveness of an intervention program to promote active aging in the elderly referred to Mashhad health centers. METHODS This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 60 elderly individuals without disabling diseases and cognitive impairment who presented to the Daneshamooz health center in Mashhad in 2021. Through a simple block allocation scheme, those who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received the health promotion program during 6 sessions (one session per week) about nutrition, physical activity, responsibility, stress management, communications, and spiritual aspects. The data were gathered using the active aging questionnaire and analyzed using the SPSS software version 25; independent and paired t-test, Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney U tests were utilized. P value< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS The results of this study demonstrated that after the intervention, the total active aging score in the intervention group increased significantly (68.5±3 to 85±8.25) (P<0.001) and there was a significant difference between the control and intervention groups (68±3.25 to 85±8.25) (P<0.001). CONCLUSION According to the results, training based on a health-enhancement approach can effectively promote active aging in the elderly. Therefore, more attention should be paid to strategic planning for active aging in health centers.Trial Registration Number: IRCT20210308050639N.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are two of the most common chronic diseases and lifestyle modification, including diet, exercise and weight management, are recognised as important for prevention. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been shown to contribute to lifestyle modification. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of CBT, compared to no intervention/standard care only, in patients with obesity and/or T2DM, with a focus on health outcomes and implementation of changes long-term. Nine randomised controlled trials (RCT) with 902 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The health outcomes included weight loss and maintenance and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c, a measure of blood glucose control) whilst the lifestyle changes included diet, physical activity, smoking, and compliance with treatments. There was a statistically significant benefit of CBT for weight loss and weight maintenance (based on 3 RCTs each) with a medium effect size, but no significant effect on HbA1c (based on 3 RCTs). In all 3 RCTs that evaluated depression, a significant benefit was observed. As the behavioural outcomes were too heterogenous to be pooled for a meta-analysis, they were reviewed in a descriptive manner only. Benefits were reported in terms of better dietary choices/reduced energy intake, increased physical activity, better adherence to medication and glucose monitoring as well as a reduction in smoking. The authors suggest that CBT appears to be moderately effective in promoting lifestyle modifications and weight loss.
Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the contribution of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to the implementation of lifestyle changes, considering health-related and behavioral outcomes. A systematic literature review was performed using multiple databases (PsycInfo, PubMed and MEDLINE). The inclusion criteria comprised randomised controlled trials of CBT for lifestyle changes in patients with obesity and/or type 2 diabetes. The quality of study reporting was assessed with the revised Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool. A meta-analysis was conducted on studies with appropriate outcomes. Nine randomised controlled trials, with a total sample size of 902 participants, met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis has shown a medium, significant effect size of CBT interventions for weight loss and weight maintenance, and a low, non-significant effect size of CBT interventions for reducing glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. A separate, combined, meta-analysis for all nine calculated effect sizes has yielded a medium and significant overall effect size for the model. Our review of the studies about the effectiveness of CBT in implementing lifestyle changes has, in comparison to usual control groups, proven the efficacy of CBT interventions in implementing lifestyle changes, especially for weight loss and weight maintenance.
