Moderate consumption of alcohol has been considered as cardioprotective as it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by improving the lipid profile. This systematic review investigated the effects of regular moderate alcohol consumption of up to 60 g/day on lipoprotein subfraction changes and underlying mechanisms. A total of one hundred and fourteen studies were included in this review. The results showed that up to 60 g/day of alcohol intake increased the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) subfractions. Alcohol also increased the cardioprotective effect by increasing the cholesterol efflux capacity and paraoxonase activity in moderate drinkers. Moderate intake may also positively affect the low-density lipoprotein size. Further robust studies are required to investigate the effects of alcohol consumption on LDL subfractions and apoB lipoproteins in people with chronic diseases. Healthcare professionals can use the results of this research to understand the impact of moderate alcohol intake on HDL subfractions and its association with cardiovascular disease.
Abstract
CONTEXT Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and improvement in cardiovascular risk markers, including lipoproteins and lipoprotein subfractions. OBJECTIVE To systematically review the relationship between moderate alcohol intake, lipoprotein subfractions, and related mechanisms. DATA SOURCES Following PRISMA, all human and ex vivo studies with an alcohol intake up to 60 g/d were included from 8 databases. DATA EXTRACTION A total of 17 478 studies were screened, and data were extracted from 37 intervention and 77 observational studies. RESULTS Alcohol intake was positively associated with all HDL subfractions. A few studies found lower levels of small LDLs, increased average LDL particle size, and nonlinear relationships to apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins. Cholesterol efflux capacity and paraoxonase activity were consistently increased. Several studies had unclear or high risk of bias, and heterogeneous laboratory methods restricted comparability between studies. CONCLUSIONS Up to 60 g/d alcohol can cause changes in lipoprotein subfractions and related mechanisms that could influence cardiovascular health. Postprandial glycaemic response (PPGR) to foods can be different from person to person. This could be the reason why people experience different weight loss outcomes with standardised diets such as a low glycaemic index diet, low-fat diet or a low carbohydrate diet. In this single-centre, population-based, randomised, blinded clinical trial, 204 participants with irregular glucose metabolism and obesity were randomised to consume either a low-fat or personalised diet for six months in combination with fourteen behavioural change counselling sessions. The participants in the personalised diet group received a colour-coded meal score to indicate their estimated PPGR for different foods. The results of this study showed no significant weight reduction in the personalised diet group compared to the low-fat diet. Further robust studies are required to develop appropriate precision nutrition interventions for weight loss and energy balance. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand that both a low-fat diet and a personalised diet, coupled with behavioural counselling, may be effective in promoting weight loss in obese populations with irregular glucose metabolism.
Abstract
IMPORTANCE Interindividual variability in postprandial glycemic response (PPGR) to the same foods may explain why low glycemic index or load and low-carbohydrate diet interventions have mixed weight loss outcomes. A precision nutrition approach that estimates personalized PPGR to specific foods may be more efficacious for weight loss. OBJECTIVE To compare a standardized low-fat vs a personalized diet regarding percentage of weight loss in adults with abnormal glucose metabolism and obesity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS The Personal Diet Study was a single-center, population-based, 6-month randomized clinical trial with measurements at baseline (0 months) and 3 and 6 months conducted from February 12, 2018, to October 28, 2021. A total of 269 adults aged 18 to 80 years with a body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) ranging from 27 to 50 and a hemoglobin A1c level ranging from 5.7% to 8.0% were recruited. Individuals were excluded if receiving medications other than metformin or with evidence of kidney disease, assessed as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation, to avoid recruiting patients with advanced type 2 diabetes. INTERVENTIONS Participants were randomized to either a low-fat diet (<25% of energy intake; standardized group) or a personalized diet that estimates PPGR to foods using a machine learning algorithm (personalized group). Participants in both groups received a total of 14 behavioral counseling sessions and self-monitored dietary intake. In addition, the participants in the personalized group received color-coded meal scores on estimated PPGR delivered via a mobile app. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was the percentage of weight loss from baseline to 6 months. Secondary outcomes included changes in body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, and percentage of body weight), resting energy expenditure, and adaptive thermogenesis. Data were collected at baseline and 3 and 6 months. Analysis was based on intention to treat using linear mixed modeling. RESULTS Of a total of 204 adults randomized, 199 (102 in the personalized group vs 97 in the standardized group) contributed data (mean [SD] age, 58 [11] years; 133 women [66.8%]; mean [SD] body mass index, 33.9 [4.8]). Weight change at 6 months was -4.31% (95% CI, -5.37% to -3.24%) for the standardized group and -3.26% (95% CI, -4.25% to -2.26%) for the personalized group, which was not significantly different (difference between groups, 1.05% [95% CI, -0.40% to 2.50%]; P = .16). There were no between-group differences in body composition and adaptive thermogenesis; however, the change in resting energy expenditure was significantly greater in the standardized group from 0 to 6 months (difference between groups, 92.3 [95% CI, 0.9-183.8] kcal/d; P = .05). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE A personalized diet targeting a reduction in PPGR did not result in greater weight loss compared with a low-fat diet at 6 months. Future studies should assess methods of increasing dietary self-monitoring adherence and intervention exposure. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03336411.

Obesity is an important risk factor for chronic diseases. Aside from well-established mechanisms such as obesity-induced inflammation, alterations in sugar and lipid metabolism, and steroid hormone signalling, imbalances in the composition of the gut microbiome have also been linked to the progression of obesity and its cardio-metabolic sequelae. The aim of this study was to investigate whether intermittent calorie restriction (ICR) (operationalised as the 5:2 diet) or continuous calorie restriction (CCR) induced alterations in the gut microbiome, and to which extent these were associated with overall weight loss irrespective of the dietary intervention in overweight or obese adults. This study was conducted using data and samples of the HELENA trial which was a parallel-arm randomised controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups, i.e., an ICR (n = 49), a CCR (n = 49), or a control group (n = 52) over a 50-week period in a 1:1:1 ratio. Results showed that the type of calorie restriction or the amount of weight lost were not accompanied by substantial and consistent shifts in gut microbiome composition or the abundance of individual bacterial taxa. Authors conclude that moderate ICR or CCR interventions as well as an overall moderate weight loss induced by calorie restriction (irrespective of which form) may not be associated with significant changes in the gut microbiome of overweight and obese adults, notwithstanding observed metabolic improvements.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The gut microbiota has been suggested to play a significant role in the development of overweight and obesity. However, the effects of calorie restriction on gut microbiota of overweight and obese adults, especially over longer durations, are largely unexplored. METHODS Here, we longitudinally analyzed the effects of intermittent calorie restriction (ICR) operationalized as the 5:2 diet versus continuous calorie restriction (CCR) on fecal microbiota of 147 overweight or obese adults in a 50-week parallel-arm randomized controlled trial, the HELENA Trial. The primary outcome of the trial was the differential effects of ICR versus CCR on gene expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue. Changes in the gut microbiome, which are the focus of this publication, were defined as exploratory endpoint of the trial. The trial comprised a 12-week intervention period, a 12-week maintenance period, and a final follow-up period of 26 weeks. RESULTS Both diets resulted in ~5% weight loss. However, except for Lactobacillales being enriched after ICR, post-intervention microbiome composition did not significantly differ between groups. Overall weight loss was associated with significant metabolic improvements, but not with changes in the gut microbiome. Nonetheless, the abundance of the Dorea genus at baseline was moderately predictive of subsequent weight loss (AUROC of 0.74 for distinguishing the highest versus lowest weight loss quartiles). Despite the lack of consistent intervention effects on microbiome composition, significant study group-independent co-variation between gut bacterial families and metabolic biomarkers, anthropometric measures, and dietary composition was detectable. Our analysis in particular revealed associations between insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR) and Akkermansiaceae, Christensenellaceae, and Tanerellaceae. It also suggests the possibility of a beneficial modulation of the latter two intestinal taxa by a diet high in vegetables and fiber, and low in processed meat. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our results suggest that the gut microbiome remains stable and highly individual-specific under dietary calorie restriction. Aging is marked by increased risk for type 2 diabetes, reduced muscle mass and strength (ie, sarcopenia), decreased physical function and cardiorespiratory fitness, ectopic fat deposition, and insulin resistance all of which increase the risk for physical disability, morbidity, and mortality. These adverse health consequences associated with advanced age are exacerbated with obesity and physical inactivity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of weight loss with or without exercise on skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, exclusively in obese older adults. This study is a 2-site, 6-month randomized controlled trial with a parallel group design. Eighty-six older (60–80 years of age), physically inactive men and women with obesity were randomised into one of the 3 treatments (1:1:1 allocation ratio): control (health education), calorie restriction-induced weight loss, and weight loss with exercise. Results suggest that weight loss via calorie restriction alone is insufficient to significantly improve skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity and requires the addition of exercise to incur benefit, which was also true for clinical measures of insulin resistance including haemoglobin A1C [a blood test that measures the average blood sugar levels over a period of 3 months] and fasting insulin. Authors conclude that regular exercise should be considered as a useful and manageable adjunct to traditional weight loss therapies for older adults with obesity to mitigate risk for chronic disease and maintain functional independence and quality of life.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging-related disease risk is exacerbated by obesity and physical inactivity. It is unclear how weight loss and increased activity improve risk in older adults. We aimed to determine the effects of diet-induced weight loss with and without exercise on insulin sensitivity, VO2peak, body composition, and physical function in older obese adults. METHODS Physically inactive older (68.6 ± 4.5 years) obese (body mass index 37.4 ± 4.9 kg/m2) adults were randomized to health education control (HEC; n = 25); diet-induced weight loss (WL; n = 31); or weight loss and exercise (WLEX; n = 28) for 6 months. Insulin sensitivity was measured by hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, body composition by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and MRI, strength by isokinetic dynamometry, and VO2peak by graded exercise test. RESULTS WLEX improved (p < .05) peripheral insulin sensitivity (+75 ± 103%) versus HEC (+12 ± 67%); WL (+36 ± 47%) versus HEC did not reach statistical significance. WLEX increased VO2peak (+7 ± 12%) versus WL (-2 ± 24%) and prevented reductions in strength and lean mass induced by WL (p < .05). WLEX decreased abdominal adipose tissue (-16 ± 9%) versus HEC (-3 ± 8%) and intermuscular adipose tissue (-15 ± 13%) versus both HEC (+9 ± 15%) and WL (+2 ± 11%; p < .01). CONCLUSIONS Exercise with weight loss improved insulin sensitivity and VO2peak, decreased ectopic fat, and preserved lean mass and strength. Weight loss alone decreased lean mass and strength. Older adults intending to lose weight should perform regular exercise to promote cardiometabolic and functional benefits, which may not occur with calorie restriction-induced weight loss alone.

Authors hypothesised that lipid infusion would increase dynamin related protein 1 [a type of protein]-mediated mitochondrial fission in skeletal muscle independent of function and content, consequently reducing peripheral insulin sensitivity. The study included sedentary but otherwise healthy adults who were prospectively randomized to receive either lipid or saline infusion to isolate the direct contribution of fatty acids to skeletal muscle mitochondrial dynamics. Results show that mitochondrial fission and quality control networks are activated in response to lipid infusion which occurs independent of changes in mitochondrial content or capacity and contributes to the onset of insulin resistance in healthy humans. Authors conclude that treatments that limit lipid-induced activation of mitochondrial fission and/or quality control processes may have therapeutic value in the treatment of insulin resistance.
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS A diminution in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function due to ectopic lipid accumulation and excess nutrient intake is thought to contribute to insulin resistance and the development of type 2 diabetes. However, the functional integrity of mitochondria in insulin-resistant skeletal muscle remains highly controversial. METHODS 19 healthy adults (age:28.4 ± 1.7 years; BMI:22.7 ± 0.3 kg/m2) received an overnight intravenous infusion of lipid (20% Intralipid) or saline followed by a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp to assess insulin sensitivity using a randomized crossover design. Skeletal muscle biopsies were obtained after the overnight lipid infusion to evaluate activation of mitochondrial dynamics proteins, ex-vivo mitochondrial membrane potential, ex-vivo oxidative phosphorylation and electron transfer capacity, and mitochondrial ultrastructure. RESULTS Overnight lipid infusion increased dynamin related protein 1 (DRP1) phosphorylation at serine 616 and PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) expression (P = 0.003 and P = 0.008, respectively) in skeletal muscle while reducing mitochondrial membrane potential (P = 0.042). The lipid infusion also increased mitochondrial-associated lipid droplet formation (P = 0.011), the number of dilated cristae, and the presence of autophagic vesicles without altering mitochondrial number or respiratory capacity. Additionally, lipid infusion suppressed peripheral glucose disposal (P = 0.004) and hepatic insulin sensitivity (P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that activation of mitochondrial fission and quality control occur early in the onset of insulin resistance in human skeletal muscle. Targeting mitochondrial dynamics and quality control represents a promising new pharmacological approach for treating insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) supplementation on i) body composition, ii) skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, and insulin signalling; and iii) muscle NAD+ content and global gene expression profile. This study is a 10-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial in postmenopausal women with prediabetes who were overweight or obese. Twenty-five postmenopausal women with prediabetes were randomised to the placebo group (n=12) or the NMN group (n=13). Results show that 10 weeks of NMN supplementation increases muscle insulin signalling and muscle insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women with prediabetes who are overweight or obese. Authors conclude that the precise mechanism(s) responsible for these metabolic effects and the potential metabolic benefits of NMN supplementation in other patient populations remain to be explored.
Abstract
In rodents, obesity and aging impair nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) biosynthesis, which contributes to metabolic dysfunction. Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) availability is a rate-limiting factor in mammalian NAD+ biosynthesis. We conducted a 10-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial to evaluate the effect of NMN supplementation on metabolic function in postmenopausal women with prediabetes who were overweight or obese. Insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, assessed by using the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, and skeletal muscle insulin signaling [phosphorylation of protein kinase AKT and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR)] increased after NMN supplementation but did not change after placebo treatment. NMN supplementation up-regulated the expression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor β and other genes related to muscle remodeling. These results demonstrate that NMN increases muscle insulin sensitivity, insulin signaling, and remodeling in women with prediabetes who are overweight or obese (clinicaltrial.gov NCT03151239).

Time-restricted eating (TRE) has been identified as an effective method of losing weight in the face of rising obesity worldwide. Fasting for at least 12 hours has a beneficial effect on weight management and cardiometabolic health. Overnight fasting longer than 12 hours may result in fat-burning or ketosis. A high-fat, low-protein, low-carbohydrate snack during a 14-hour fast is believed not to raise blood sugar levels and helps with hunger management. This 8-week virtual, pilot, randomised, comparator-controlled clinical trial evaluated the benefits of following a commercial weight loss programme combined with TRE on body weight and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels. The commercial weight loss programme included calculated calories and macronutrient content in their customised meal plans, as well as coaching and troubleshooting sessions. The participants were randomly assigned to 14-hour fasting (14:10) or 12-hour fasting (control). The 14:10 group also consumed 200 kcal of mixed nuts as a snack at hour 12 to determine the effect on blood glucose levels. After the intervention for 8 weeks, the 14:10 group showed a significant reduction in body weight (11kg) and FBG (8mg/dl), and the 12:12 group significantly lost 9kg of body weight and showed a non-significant reduction in FBG (3mg/dl). Participants with higher baseline FBG levels showed a greater reduction in FBG, indicating potential greater improvements in people with diabetes. A comparison of the two groups did not show a statistically significant difference in intervention effects. A fasting snack at 12 hours did not affect FBG in the 14:10 group, which may help adherence. Due to the exploratory nature of this study, larger robust studies are needed to assess the effectiveness of 14:10 and 12:12 time-restricted fasting regimens with commercial weight loss programmes. However, healthcare professionals can use the results of this study to understand the beneficial effects of different time-restricted fasting regimens on cardiometabolic health.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Time restricted eating (TRE) is an emerging dietary intervention for weight loss that is hypothesized to reinforce the metabolic benefits of nightly fasting/ketosis. This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of a daily 14-h metabolic fast (14:10 TRE beginning after dinner, a "fasting snack" at hour 12, and ending with breakfast 14 h later) combined with a commercial weight management program on body weight and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in individuals with obesity. We also investigated the effect of the low-calorie, high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and low-protein "fasting snack" on blood glucose. METHODS This 8-week, randomized, controlled, clinical trial included men and women (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) between June and October 2020. Study procedures were conducted remotely. Participants were randomized to 14:10 or 12-h TRE (12:12, active comparator) and prescribed a diet (controlled for calories and macronutrient composition) and exercise program that included weekly customized counseling and support. The primary outcome was change from baseline in body weight in the 14:10 group. RESULTS Of the 78 randomized participants, 60 (n = 30/group) completed 8 weeks. The LS mean change from baseline in weight in the 14:10 group was -8.5% (95% CI -9.6 to -7.4; P < 0.001) and -7.1% (-8.3 to -5.8; P < 0.001) in the 12:12 group (between group difference -1.4%; -2.7 to -0.2; P < 0.05). There was a statistically significant LS mean change from baseline to week 8 in FBG in the 14:10 group of -7.6 mg/dl (95% CI -15.1 to -0.1; P < 0.05) but not in the 12:12 group (-3.1 mg/dl, -10.0 to 3.7; P = NS). Both interventions resulted in a larger reduction in FBG in participants with elevated FBG (≥100 mg/dl) at baseline (both P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In participants with obesity who completed 8 weeks of the 14:10 TRE schedule combined with a commercial weight loss program, there was statistically significant and clinically meaningful weight loss and improvements in FBG.

Individual risk of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes reflects the interplay between lifestyle behaviours acting on a backdrop of genetic predisposition. The aim of this study was to examine whether type 2 diabetes prevention strategies, either an intensive lifestyle intervention (ILS) or metformin treatment (MET), modify the association between CAD genetic risk and cardiometabolic risk factors (CRFs) in participants at high risk of type 2 diabetes. The study is a randomised controlled trial were participants were randomly allocated to one of the three groups; ILS (n = 1,079), MET (850 mg twice daily [n = 1,073]), or placebo (n = 1,082). Results indicate that there weren’t major significant differences in baseline characteristics, except for lower high-density lipoprotein and higher triglyceride in the placebo individuals compared with individuals assigned to MET or ILS. In fact, either an ILS or MET has a beneficial effect on 1-year change in different CRFs. Authors conclude that type 2 diabetes–preventive strategies for individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes provide beneficial effects on CRFs regardless of CAD genetic risk profile.
Abstract
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is more frequent among individuals with dysglycemia. Preventive interventions for diabetes can improve cardiometabolic risk factors (CRFs), but it is unclear whether the benefits on CRFs are similar for individuals at different genetic risk for CAD. We built a 201-variant polygenic risk score (PRS) for CAD and tested for interaction with diabetes prevention strategies on 1-year changes in CRFs in 2,658 Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) participants. We also examined whether separate lifestyle behaviors interact with PRS and affect changes in CRFs in each intervention group. Participants in both the lifestyle and metformin interventions had greater improvement in the majority of recognized CRFs compared with placebo (P < 0.001) irrespective of CAD genetic risk (P interaction > 0.05). We detected nominal significant interactions between PRS and dietary quality and physical activity on 1-year change in BMI, fasting glucose, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol in individuals randomized to metformin or placebo, but none of them achieved the multiple-testing correction for significance. This study confirms that diabetes preventive interventions improve CRFs regardless of CAD genetic risk and delivers hypothesis-generating data on the varying benefit of increasing physical activity and improving diet on intermediate cardiovascular risk factors depending on individual CAD genetic risk profile.

Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids that can protect against vascular diseases and cognitive ageing. Studies have shown that cocoa flavonoids can enhance the function of endothelial cells and blood vessels in peripheral arteries. This randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study assessed the effects of cocoa flavanols on cerebral and peripheral vascular and cognitive function. The healthy young subjects showed greater tissue oxygenation and cerebrovascular reactivity in the frontal parts of the brain during the carbon dioxide challenge after high cocoa flavonoid intervention. Furthermore, the cocoa flavonoid intervention improved cognitive and peripheral endothelial functions in healthy young subjects. Even though the mechanistic link behind the beneficial effects of flavonoids is not understood completely, the positive effects could be due to the ability of flavanols to enhance the bioavailability of circulation Nitric Oxide (NO). The study also found that flavonoids improved cognitive function in healthy individuals only when there was a high cognitive demand. Further robust studies are required to evaluate the mechanisms behind the benefits associated with acute flavonoid intake. Healthcare professionals can utilise the findings from this study to gain insight into the advantages of consuming a flavonoid-rich diet. Additionally, they can learn about the differing responses to flavanol intake between individuals.
Abstract
Cocoa flavanols protect humans against vascular disease, as evidenced by improvements in peripheral endothelial function, likely through nitric oxide signalling. Emerging evidence also suggests that flavanol-rich diets protect against cognitive aging, but mechanisms remain elusive. In a randomized double-blind within-subject acute study in healthy young adults, we link these two lines of research by showing, for the first time, that flavanol intake leads to faster and greater brain oxygenation responses to hypercapnia, as well as higher performance only when cognitive demand is high. Individual difference analyses further show that participants who benefit from flavanols intake during hypercapnia are also those who do so in the cognitive challenge. These data support the hypothesis that similar vascular mechanisms underlie both the peripheral and cerebral effects of flavanols. They further show the importance of studies combining physiological and graded cognitive challenges in young adults to investigate the actions of dietary flavanols on brain function.

As the body ages, there is a decline in muscle mass and function, which can be combatted with diet, exercise, and supplementation. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) or vitamin B3 has been shown in animal studies to promote healthy muscle, however its effects in human muscle are unknown. This randomised control trial of overweight older men aimed to determine if NR can be used by muscle and whether it has any effect on muscle function. The results showed that NR supplementation (1 g/day) for 3 weeks can be used by the muscle but had no effect on muscle function as shown by the hand grip test. Supplementation also decreased energy production in muscle and had anti-inflammatory effects. It was concluded that NR is available to muscle and that it may have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be of benefit to older individuals.
Abstract
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is modulated by conditions of metabolic stress and has been reported to decline with aging in preclinical models, but human data are sparse. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation ameliorates metabolic dysfunction in rodents. We aimed to establish whether oral NR supplementation in aged participants can increase the skeletal muscle NAD+ metabolome and if it can alter muscle mitochondrial bioenergetics. We supplemented 12 aged men with 1 g NR per day for 21 days in a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, crossover trial. Targeted metabolomics showed that NR elevated the muscle NAD+ metabolome, evident by increased nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide clearance products. Muscle RNA sequencing revealed NR-mediated downregulation of energy metabolism and mitochondria pathways, without altering mitochondrial bioenergetics. NR also depressed levels of circulating inflammatory cytokines. Our data establish that oral NR is available to aged human muscle and identify anti-inflammatory effects of NR.
