Among individuals with hypertension, those with resistant hypertension (RH) appear to have the greatest risk of cerebrovascular disease and associated cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential influence of individual differences in pre-treatment inflammatory profiles on changes in cognition following lifestyle modification among RH participants in the TRIUMPH clinical trial. This study is a report based on the TRIUMPH study which was a randomised clinical trial. One hundred forty patients with RH were randomised with 2:1 allocation to either a 4-month Centre-based Lifestyle intervention or Standardized Education and Physician Advice. Results show that basal levels of elevated peripheral inflammation may represent an intermediate phenotype of risk for cognitive decline. In fact, individuals with higher levels of c-reactive protein at baseline demonstrated greater improvements in Executive Function/Learning following participation in an intensive lifestyle intervention. Authors conclude that their findings may help inform targeted treatments to reduce ADRD among middle-aged and older adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors.
Abstract
Individuals with resistant hypertension (RH) have the greatest risk of cerebrovascular disease and cognitive impairment among individuals with hypertension. Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines may represent a critical yet unexamined factor influencing the impact of healthy lifestyle changes on cognitive function. We explored the influence of inflammation on changes in cognition following lifestyle modification among individuals with RH participating in the TRIUMPH clinical trial. One hundred forty participants with RH completed a battery of neurocognitive tests along with the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and were subsequently randomized to an intensive 4-month lifestyle modification intervention or to education and physician advice control. Results indicated that the effects of lifestyle modification on Executive Function and Learning were moderated by pre-intervention hsCRP levels (P = .049), with treatment efficacy increasing across levels of baseline inflammation levels (low: d = 0.12; mild: d = 0.43; moderate: d = 0.81). We conclude that inflammatory profiles may help identify individuals more likely to improve executive functioning resulting from lifestyle modification.

This study's aim was to assess the association of adherence to plant-based dietary patterns and changes in them with risks of major chronic diseases, including T2D, CVD, and cancer, and mortality. This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of 55 prospective studies. Results showed that greater adherence to a plant-based dietary pattern was inversely associated with risks of T2D, CVD, cancer and all-cause mortality. Associations for T2D, CVD, and cancer were strengthened when the plant-based diets further emphasised healthful plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Authors concluded that their findings support the current recommendations that emphasise consuming high-quality plant-based foods for achieving optimal health.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based dietary patterns are gaining more attention due to their potential in reducing the risk of developing major chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and mortality, while an up-to-date comprehensive quantitative review is lacking. This study aimed to summarize the existing prospective observational evidence on associations between adherence to plant-based dietary patterns and chronic disease outcomes. METHODS We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of evidence across prospective observational studies. The data sources used were PubMed and MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and screening of references. We included all prospective observational studies that evaluated the association between adherence to plant-based dietary patterns and incidence of T2D, CVD, cancer, and mortality among adults (≥ 18 years). RESULTS A total of 76 publications were identified, including 2,230,443 participants with 60,718 cases of incident T2D, 157,335 CVD cases, 57,759 cancer cases, and 174,435 deaths. An inverse association was observed between higher adherence to a plant-based dietary pattern and risks of T2D (RR, 0.82 [95% CI: 0.77-0.86]), CVD (0.90 [0.85-0.94]), cancer (0.91 [0.87-0.96]), and all-cause mortality (0.84 [0.78-0.92]) with moderate to high heterogeneity across studies (I2 ranged: 47.8-95.4%). The inverse associations with T2D, CVD and cancer were strengthened when healthy plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, were emphasized in the definition of plant-based dietary patterns (T2D: 0.79 [0.72-0.87]; CVD: 0.85 [0.80-0.92]; cancer: 0.86 [0.80-0.92]; I2 ranged: 53.1-84.1%). Association for mortality was largely similar when the analyses were restricted to healthy plant-based diets (0.86 [0.80-0.92], I2 = 91.9%). In contrast, unhealthy plant-based diets were positively associated with these disease outcomes. Among four studies that examined changes in dietary patterns, increased adherence to plant-based dietary patterns was associated with a significantly reduced risk of T2D (0.83 [0.71-0.96]; I2 = 71.5%) and a marginally lower risk of mortality (0.95 [0.91-1.00]; I2 = 0%). CONCLUSIONS Better adherence to plant-based dietary patterns, especially those emphasizing healthy plant-based foods, is beneficial for lowering the risks of major chronic conditions, including T2D, CVD, cancer, as well as premature deaths. Cocoa extract also contains methylxanthines [alkaloids] such as theobromine and caffeine, which may enhance the vascular and central nervous system effects of cocoa flavanols. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flavanol-rich cocoa extract containing all potential bioactive components of the cocoa bean on clinical cardiovascular outcomes. This study is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2 × 2 factorial trial testing a cocoa extract supplement and a multivitamin supplement (COSMOS). This study focuses on the cocoa extract component of the trial. A total of 21,442 participants underwent randomisation to one of the four groups. Results show that after a median of 3.6 years of treatment there was no statistically significant effect on the primary outcome of total cardiovascular events. However, cocoa flavanol supplementation significantly reduced cardiovascular disease death by 27%, whereas other individual cardiovascular outcomes had no significant reductions in risk. Authors conclude that longer-term follow-up of the trial cohort and ongoing ancillary mechanistic studies in COSMOS may further elucidate the relation between cocoa extract supplementation and clinical cardiovascular events.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Cocoa extract is a source of flavanols that favorably influence vascular risk factors in small and short-term trials, yet effects on clinical cardiovascular events are untested. OBJECTIVES We examined whether cocoa extract supplementation decreases total cardiovascular disease (CVD) among older adults. METHODS We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2-by-2 factorial trial of cocoa extract supplementation and multivitamins for prevention of CVD and cancer among 21,442 US adults (12,666 women aged ≥65 y and 8776 men aged ≥60 y), free of major CVD and recently diagnosed cancer. The intervention phase was June 2015 through December 2020. This article reports on the cocoa extract intervention. Participants were randomly assigned to a cocoa extract supplement [500 mg flavanols/d, including 80 mg (-)-epicatechin] or placebo. The primary outcome was a composite of confirmed incident total cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, coronary revascularization, cardiovascular death, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery surgery, and unstable angina. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 3.6 y, 410 participants taking cocoa extract and 456 taking placebo had confirmed total cardiovascular events (HR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.78, 1.02; P = 0.11). For secondary endpoints, HRs were 0.73 (95% CI: 0.54, 0.98) for CVD death, 0.87 (95% CI: 0.66, 1.16) for MI, 0.91 (95% CI: 0.70, 1.17) for stroke, 0.95 (95% CI: 0.77, 1.17) for coronary revascularization, neutral for other individual cardiovascular endpoints, and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.77, 1.03) for all-cause mortality. Per-protocol analyses censoring follow-up at nonadherence supported a lower risk of total cardiovascular events (HR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72, 0.99). There were no safety concerns. CONCLUSIONS Cocoa extract supplementation did not significantly reduce total cardiovascular events among older adults but reduced CVD death by 27%. Potential reductions in total cardiovascular events were supported in per-protocol analyses. Additional research is warranted to clarify whether cocoa extract may reduce clinical cardiovascular events. This trial is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02422745.

This study is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2 × 2 factorial trial testing a cocoa extract supplement and a multivitamin supplement. A total of 21,442 participants underwent randomisation to one of the four groups. Results show that a daily MVM did not reduce the primary outcome of total invasive cancer. Furthermore, MVM supplementation did not have a significant effect on the secondary outcomes of total cardiovascular events, CVD death, or all-cause mortality. Authors conclude that their findings do not support the regular use of MVMs for cancer or CVD prevention among generally healthy older men and women. Future studies are needed to clarify the role of long-term MVM use on nutritional status and the balance of risks and benefits on cancer, CVD, and other aging-related outcomes.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Although older adults commonly take multivitamin-multimineral (MVM) supplements to promote health, evidence on the use of daily MVMs on invasive cancer is limited. OBJECTIVES The study objective was to determine if a daily MVM decreases total invasive cancer among older adults. METHODS We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2-by-2 factorial trial of a daily MVM and cocoa extract for prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among 21,442 US adults (12,666 women aged ≥65 y and 8776 men aged ≥60 y) free of major CVD and recently diagnosed cancer. The intervention phase was from June 2015 through December 2020. This article reports on the MVM intervention. Participants were randomly assigned to daily MVM or placebo. The primary outcome was total invasive cancer, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer. Secondary outcomes included major site-specific cancers, total CVD, all-cause mortality, and total cancer risk among those with a baseline history of cancer. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 3.6 y, invasive cancer occurred in 518 participants in the MVM group and 535 participants in the placebo group (HR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.86, 1.09; P = 0.57). We observed no significant effect of a daily MVM on breast cancer (HR: 1.06; 95% CI: 0.79, 1.42) or colorectal cancer (HR: 1.30; 95% CI: 0.80, 2.12). We observed a protective effect of a daily MVM on lung cancer (HR: 0.62; 95% CI: 0.42, 0.92). The composite CVD outcome occurred in 429 participants in the MVM group and 437 participants in the placebo group (HR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.86, 1.12). MVM use did not significantly affect all-cause mortality (HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.81, 1.08). There were no safety concerns. CONCLUSIONS A daily MVM supplement, compared with placebo, did not significantly reduce the incidence of total cancer among older men and women. Future studies are needed to determine the effects of MVMs on other aging-related outcomes among older adults. This trial is registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02422745.

Results indicate that there was no significant evidence of an association between adherence to a vegan diet and risks of primary CVD or a coronary heart disease event. Authors conclude that further experimental evidence and research in large diverse cohorts is required in order to better understand the clinical relevance and public health implications of the vegan diet.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based diets are gaining attention globally due to their environmental benefits and perceived health-protective role. A vegan diet may have cardiovascular benefits; however, evidence remains conflicting and insufficiently assessed. OBJECTIVES We evaluated the utility of the vegan diet in cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating the association between vegan diets and cardiovascular outcomes. We searched 5 databases (Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and OpenGrey) through 31 October 2020. Four investigators independently screened the full texts for inclusion, assessed quality, and extracted data from published reports. RESULTS Out of the 5729 identified records, 7 were included, comprising over 73,000 participants, of whom at least 7661 were vegans. Three studies, with at least 73,426 individuals (including at least 7380 vegans), examined risks of primary cardiovascular events (total CVD, coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, total stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and ischemic stroke) in individuals who followed a vegan diet compared to those who did not. None of the studies reported a significantly increased or decreased risk of any cardiovascular outcome. One study suggested that vegans were at greater risk of ischemic stroke compared to individuals who consumed animal products (HR, 1.54; 95% CI, 0.95-2.48). Yet in another study, vegans showed lower common carotid artery intima-media thickness (0.56 ± 0.1 mm vs. 0.74 ± 0.1 mm in controls; P < 0.001), and in 3 studies of recurrent CVD events, vegans had 0-52% lower rates. Furthermore, endothelial function did not differ between vegans and nonvegans. Using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach, evidence was deemed to be of low to very low strength/quality. CONCLUSIONS Among the Western populations studied, evidence weakly demonstrates associations between vegan diets and risk of CVDs, with the direction of associations varying with the specific CVD outcome tested. However, more high-quality research on this topic is needed. This study was registered at PROSPERO as CRD42019146835.

Furthermore, substitution of red meat, eggs, dairy products, or legumes with nuts was associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality. Authors conclude that their findings support the need for consideration of protein sources, in addition to the amount of protein intake, in future dietary guidelines.
Abstract
Background Dietary recommendations regarding protein intake have been focused on the amount of protein. However, such recommendations without considering specific protein sources may be simplistic and insufficient. Methods and Results We included 102 521 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative between 1993 and 1998, and followed them through February 2017. During 1 876 205 person-years of follow-up, 25 976 deaths occurred. Comparing the highest with the lowest quintile, plant protein intake was inversely associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.91 [0.86, 0.96]), cardiovascular disease mortality (HR, 0.88 [0.79, 0.97]), and dementia mortality (HR, 0.79 [0.67, 0.94]). Among major protein sources, comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of consumption, processed red meat (HR, 1.06 [1.01, 1.10]) or eggs (HR, 1.14 [1.10, 1.19]) was associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality. Unprocessed red meat (HR, 1.12 [1.02, 1.23]), eggs (HR, 1.24 [1.14, 1.34]), or dairy products (HR, 1.11 [1.02, 1.22]) was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. Egg consumption was associated with higher risk of cancer mortality (HR, 1.10 [1.02, 1.19]). Processed red meat consumption was associated with higher risk of dementia mortality (HR, 1.20 [1.05, 1.32]), while consumption of poultry (HR, 0.85 [0.75, 0.97]) or eggs (HR, 0.86 [0.75, 0.98]) was associated with lower risk of dementia mortality. In substitution analysis, substituting of animal protein with plant protein was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and dementia mortality, and substitution of total red meat, eggs, or dairy products with nuts was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. Conclusions Different dietary protein sources have varying associations with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, and dementia mortality. Our findings support the need for consideration of protein sources in future dietary guidelines.

African Americans are more susceptible to vitamin D deficiency. In addition they have lower amounts of cellular glutathione (GSH), which is an antioxidant produced in the body from L-cysteine, capable of affecting genes involved in vitamin D production. Clinical trials have indicated a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and poorer outcomes in patients with COVID-19. This review paper looked at data in humans, animal models and at the cellular level and proposed that African Americans are susceptible to vitamin D deficiency due to increased skin pigmentation affecting its production. Reduced GSH was attributed to decreased dietary intake of L-cysteine, and lower levels of biological compounds, which are involved in the production of GSH. Research surrounding vitamin D’s role in immunity and lowering viral infection risk was reviewed and several routes were proposed, such as increasing anti-microbial action, decreasing inflammation, increasing anti-oxidants and blocking viruses entering cells. It was concluded that randomised control trials on vitamin D supplementation have been underwhelming. This disconnect with trials showing a relationship between low vitamin D levels and poor clinical outcomes is due to the fact that vitamin D was tested in isolation. More randomised control trials are needed to investigate co-supplementation with L-cysteine on outcomes of COVID-19 infection in African Americans. Clinicians could use this review to understand the relationship between vitamin D and L-cysteine and, in lieu of any randomised control trials, as a potential justification for co- supplementation of Vitamin D and L-cysteine in patients with vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19.
Abstract
Early reports indicate an association between the severity of the COVID-19 infection and the widespread 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency known to exist in populations around the world. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common among African American (AA) communities, where the COVID-19 infection rate is three-fold higher, and the mortality rate nearly six-fold higher, compared with rates in predominantly white communities. COVID-19 infection primarily affects the lungs and airways. Previous reports have linked 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency with subclinical interstitial lung disease. AA are at risk for lower cellular glutathione (GSH) levels, and GSH deficiency epigenetically impairs VD biosynthesis pathway genes. Compared with vitamin D alone, co-supplementation of vitamin D and L-cysteine (a GSH precursor) showed a better efficacy in improving levels of GSH and VD-regulatory genes at the cellular/tissue level, increasing 25(OH) vitamin D levels, and reducing inflammation biomarkers in the blood in mice studies. We propose that randomized clinical trials are needed to examine the potential of co-supplementation with anti-inflammatory antioxidants, vitamin D and L-cysteine in correcting the 25(OH)VD deficiency and preventing the 'cytokine storm,' one of the most severe consequences of infection with COVID-19, thereby preventing the adverse clinical effects of COVID-19 infection in the vulnerable AA population.

Gout is prevalent in most Western countries. Modifying the contributary factors such as obesity and alcohol intake could prevent gout, however the impact this could have on prevention is unknown. This cohort study of 44,654 men, aimed to estimate the proportion of gout cases that could be prevented through the modification of risk factors. The results showed that the most important risk factor for gout was body mass index (BMI) and modifying other risk factors did not prevent gout. 77% of gout cases could be prevented if all men had been of normal weight, had no alcohol intake, if they adhered to a diet known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and if they didn't take drugs to increase urine output. It was concluded that weight loss in men determines their ability to prevent gout, regardless of whether they have modified other contributory factors. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to understand that unless weight loss is achieved in individuals who are overweight and have gout, then other interventions may have minimal impact. Recommending the DASH diet to achieve weight loss, may be more successful in the long-term management of gout.
Abstract
Importance: The population impact of modifying obesity and other key risk factors for hyperuricemia has been estimated in cross-sectional studies; however, the proportion of incident gout cases (a clinical end point) that could be prevented by modifying such factors has not been evaluated. Objective: To estimate the proportion of incident gout cases that could be avoided through simultaneous modification of obesity and other key risk factors. Design, Setting, and Participants: The Health Professionals Follow-up Study is a US prospective cohort study of 51 529 male health professionals enrolled in 1986 and followed up through questionnaires every 2 years through 2012. Self-reported gout cases were confirmed through June 2015. Clean and complete data used for this analysis were available in June 2016, with statistical analyses performed from July 2016 to July 2019. Exposures: From data collected in the validated questionnaires, men were categorized to low-risk groups according to combinations of the following 4 factors: normal body mass index (BMI [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared]; <25), no alcohol intake, adherence to Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)-style diet (highest quintile of DASH diet score), and no diuretic use. Main Outcomes and Measures: Population attributable risks (PARs) for incident gout meeting the preliminary American College of Rheumatology survey criteria, overall and stratified by BMI. Results: We analyzed 44 654 men (mean [SD] age, 54.0 [9.8] years) with no history of gout at baseline. During 26 years of follow-up, 1741 (3.9%) developed incident gout. Among all participants, PAR for the 4 risk factors combined (BMI, diet, alcohol use, and diuretic use) was 77% (95% CI, 56%-88%). Among men with normal weight (BMI <25.0) and overweight (BMI 25.0-29.9), we estimated that more than half of incident gout cases (69% [95% CI, 42%-83%] and 59% [95% CI, 30%-75%], respectively) may have been prevented by the combination of DASH-style diet, no alcohol intake, and no diuretic use. However, among men with obesity (BMI ≥30), PAR was substantially lower and not significant (5% [95% CI, 0%-47%]). Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this cohort study suggest that addressing excess adiposity and other key modifiable factors has the potential to prevent the majority of incident gout cases among men. Men with obesity may not benefit from other modifications unless weight loss is addressed.

Obesity is a common contributor to knee joint arthritis. In a previous trial, called the Intensive Diet and Exercise for Arthritis (IDEA) trial, it was demonstrated that 18 months of weight loss via a combination of diet and exercise was superior to diet alone for improved clinical outcomes in 454 individuals with knee joint arthritis. This sub analysis of the original randomised control trial, aimed to determine if weight loss due to diet plus exercise was more beneficial than weight loss due to diet or exercise alone to the way a person walked with knee joint arthritis. The results showed that weight loss was greatest amongst the diet and exercise group, then the diet group, and finally the exercise group. The diet and exercise group walked faster than either the diet or exercise alone groups. Dietary weight loss resulted in improved pressure upon the hip, knee and ankle joints, which was attenuated with a combination of diet and exercise. It was concluded that dietary weight loss was more beneficial for knee joint arthritis, however dietary weight loss combined with exercise is still superior to exercise alone. This study could be used by healthcare professionals to recommend a dietary weight loss regime for individuals with knee arthritis in order to improve their ability to walk.
Abstract
The Intensive Diet and Exercise for Arthritis (IDEA) trial was an 18-month randomized controlled trial that enrolled 454 overweight and obese older adults with symptomatic and radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA). Participants were randomized to either exercise (E), intensive diet-induced weight loss (D), or intensive diet-induced weight loss plus exercise (D + E) interventions. We previously reported that the clinical benefits of D + E were significantly greater than with either intervention alone (e.g., greater pain reduction, and better function, mobility, and health-related quality of life). We now test the hypothesis that D + E has greater overall benefit on gait mechanics compared to either intervention alone. Knee joint loading was analyzed using inverse dynamics and musculoskeletal modeling. Analysis of covariance determined the interventions' effects on gait. The D + E group walked significantly faster at 18-month follow-up (1.35 m s-1) than E (1.29 m s-1, p = 0.0004) and D (1.31 m s-1, p = 0.0007). Tibiofemoral compressive impulse was significantly lower (p = 0.0007) in D (1069 N s) and D + E (1054 N s) compared to E (1130 N s). D had significantly lower peak hip external rotation moment (p = 0.01), hip abduction moment (p = 0.0003), and peak hip power production (p = 0.016) compared with E. Peak ankle plantar flexion moment was significantly less (p < 0.0001) in the two diet groups compared with E. There also was a significant dose-response to weight loss; participants that lost >10% of baseline body weight had significantly (p = 0.0001) lower resultant knee forces and lower muscle (quadriceps, hamstring, and gastrocnemius) forces than participants that had less weight loss. Compared to E, D produces significant load reductions at the hip, knee, and ankle; combining D with E attenuates these reductions, but most remain significantly better than with E alone.

Food cravings are a psychological state associated with increased food intake and body weight. Understanding food cravings and psychological behaviour may help weight management. This randomised control trial of 811 individuals on a weight loss regime aimed to determine relationships between behavioural factors and weight changes over two years. The results showed that individuals who reported the strongest food cravings, lost less weight and those who had weaker cravings lost the most weight. Craving fatty foods was associated with greater weight loss, less calories consumed and reduced fat intake. Craving carbohydrates was associated with less weight loss and greater weight regain after 2 years. Interestingly, participants lost the most weight in the first six months and then regained weight in years one and two. It was concluded that cravings were most likely to influence weight loss and regain. Individuals who craved fatty foods, were more likely to lose weight through decreased calorie and fat intake. This study could be used by health care professionals to understand that helping their obese and overweight patients to manage their food cravings may aid weight loss and prevent weight gain.
Abstract
CONTEXT Eating habits and food craving are strongly correlated with weight status. It is currently not well understood how psychological and behavioral factors influence both weight loss and weight regain. OBJECTIVE To examine the associations between psychological and behavioral predictors with weight changes and energy intake in a randomized controlled trial on weight loss. DESIGN AND SETTING The Prevention of Obesity Using Novel Dietary Strategies is a dietary intervention trial that examined the efficacy of 4 diets on weight loss over 2 years. Participants were 811 overweight (body mass index, 25-40.9 kg/m2; age, 30-70 years) otherwise healthy adults. RESULTS Every 1-point increase in craving score for high-fat foods at baseline was associated with greater weight loss (-1.62 kg, P = .0004) and a decrease in energy intake (r = -0.10, P = .01) and fat intake (r = -0.16, P < .0001) during the weight loss period. In contrast, craving for carbohydrates/starches was associated with both less weight loss (P < .0001) and more weight regain (P = .04). Greater cognitive restraint of eating at baseline was associated with both less weight loss (0.23 kg, P < .0001) and more weight regain (0.14 kg, P = .0027), whereas greater disinhibition of eating was only associated with more weight regain (0.12 kg, P = .01). CONCLUSIONS Craving for high-fat foods is predictive of greater weight loss, whereas craving for carbohydrates is predictive of less weight loss. Cognitive restraint is predictive of less weight loss and more weight regain. Interventions targeting different psychological and behavioral factors can lead to greater success in weight loss.
